Anyway, The Iliad
FYI, for today we had to read 6,9,16,18

Between 2-5= So the Trojans are getting wrecked, even though Achilles isn’t even fighting with the Greeks. So Trojan king Hector asks the people of Troy to pray to the gods.

Chapter 6: We meet Hector

What’s Paris doing?
-hiding. With Helen. Just kind of hanging out.
-Hector is pissed off at Paris for not fighting. Um hello it’s all his fault so maybe you should help out a little. We’re fighting your battle for you!
-Paris is allowing all of Troy to fight for him

What’s Hector like?
-self-conscious= doesn’t have much of a backbone, conscious of what the people are saying about him, thinks people think he’s cowardly. Different kind of hero in that sense.
-physical appearance= homeric epithet: a phrase that keeps being repeated throughout the text i.e. the tagline. The shining golden helmet of Hector, touched by god, the golden boy!
-marriage is ideal for Homer’s society
-the ultimate dad
-loving relationship with his wife
-family man
-not like rageful Achilles

Homer wants us to decide which of the two heroes we prefer

Helen
-bad mouths Menelaus AND Paris
-Paris has no “good sense” for marrying her (VI, 370)
-He made a big mistake by picking me
-calls herself a bitch.
-the Greek culture gave women (especially MOMS) a higher standing than other cultures.
-I wish I was dead because I’ve caused so much trouble
-BUT the gods let it happen!! Pushing the blame away.
-Wouldn’t you have left Menelaus too? He’s gross
-Knows that she has ruined Paris and Hector
-Knows that she will be talked about forever, and feels bad about it

This is kind of soap opera-ish.
Humans are messed up and cause a lot of unnecessary tumult. But then the gods do too!
Contrapposto= Gods step down from their godly status, and then some men are raised to a godly status
-The gods directly affect human lives and change the course of action.
-The gods have agendas
Role of women:: the female gods are generally the most interactive

Achilles and Patrocles= BFFS
-how did Patrocles die: wearing the armor of Achilles, mistaken identity
-Not pretty deaths= fighting over the bodies of the heroes
-improper funeral proceedings=rituals are important, foreshadowing
-very very gruesome death scenes (part of Homer’s agenda= does not want to glorify war) [examples: XVI 535, 770]

Achilles returns!
-comes back into the picture to avenge Patrocles
-you can’t kill by bff and get away with it
-nothing good is going to happen from now on
-fated to die
-dénouement= it’s all downhill from here

ETC: good insights from the class
Kyle:
Enkidu=Hector
Gilgamesh= Paris
-I do what I want.

Jimmy:
Disagrees with Kyle
Gilgamesh=Achilles (journey)
Enkidu=Patrocles
Paris is a flat character

Melanie:
Hector is trying to overcompensate for Paris’s laziness (Like Okonkwo in Things Fall Apart)

Megan:
Paris is a humongous bitch
